If
Christian Vazquez is healthy by the end of
Spring Training (he's rehabbing from
Tommy John surgery),
the Red Sox will very likely trade one of their three catching options before Opening Day. Vazquez—along with
Blake Swihart and Andover High School's
Ryan Hanigan—comprise one of the strongest backstop trios in all of baseball. However, few teams carry three catchers on their active roster. So, it seems that Hanigan is the most likely to be dealt. Vazquez and Swihart have nothing but long-term upside, while Hanigan is on the back end of a stellar career. If this scenario unfolds, it will be interesting to see how the two youngsters share playing time—before one emerges as the number one option.
