Yogi Berra (1925-2015) |
Growing up, it seemed like the Yankees were in the World Series
every year. Of course, as a very young Red Sox fan this was galling—but it also seemed inevitable. In fact, for a while I just assumed that the Yankees were
supposed to be in the World Series. One of the players I saw each year—watching the
afternoon telecasts of
The Fall Classic—was
Yogi Berra. Yogi passed away yesterday at the age of 90. He was one of the few
Bronx Bobmers I could tolerate (along with
Mickey Mantle). That's because in addition to being a
really good player, Yogi seemed like a really cool guy. Lost in his image as the 'goofy malaproper' is that fact that Yogi was
a three-time A.L. MVP. Not to mention the 10 World Series rings. Yogi had
class. He will be missed.
