Newly-acquired
Jean Machi—who has a grand total of three career saves—has been named Boston's new closer by manager John Farrell. So far for the Red Sox, Machi has an underwhelming 7.36 ERA in 3.2 innings of work. Sounds like a closer to us!
Junichi Tazawa, who (until very recently) has been effective as an 8th-inning "set-up" guy will
stay in that role. In our view,
Joe Kelly should be the new closer—he has velocity, stuff
and a goofy attitude (all
three important attributes for the role). Moving just-acquired
Rich Hill into the rotation would free up Kelly for ninth-inning duties—but hey, what do we know? All
we manage are (under-performing) fantasy teams.
