For a while, it actually looked promising. A fluke, check-swing "double" had given
The Carmine Hose a 3-1 lead over the Astros. Young lefty
Brian Johnson had dispensed with the "yips" and was settling down into a groove. Then, the deluge. A botched throw to second on an attempted steal led to two runs and then Houston turned on the afterburners in
an eventual 8-3 Red Sox loss. We have to start looking for little tidbits of hope—because there is no hope of this team making the post-season. And, we've given up trying to figure out how a team that spent the off-season "bolstering" their offense can't score any runs (they have been outscored 30-7 so far on this road trip). Again, the little things need to be acknowledged—like
Xander Bogaerts and
Alejandro De Aza (2 hits each) joining Betts in
some display of offense. But, it says a lot that, when the Sox go down meekly in the eighth that you
wish it was the ninth.
