The stars may be aligned for two star-crossed franchises this trading deadline. The San Diego Padres
shot for the moon last off-season by adding a bevy of talented players. The Boston Red Sox re-stocked their offense and rotation with new faces as well. To date,
neither team has fared well. But, both are looking to deal. And, ironically, both could use a 'mulligan' on some of their recent transactions. One possible deal might involve
James Shields—a guy the Red Sox have lusted after for
years. Imagine having a 200-inning starter
who never goes on the disabled list! Of course,
"Big Game James" is 33 and has $63 million left on his contract. For their part, the Padres need to replenish their depleted farm system (they're
mostly in need of a shortstop and a left-handed bat) and so sending—say—SS
Deven Marrero and left-hand hitting 1B
Travis Shaw (and maybe other prospects)
might get Shields to Boston. Stay tuned!
