They met briefly when the Red Sox played the Pirates last year,
but Brock Holt and Mark Melancon are really connecting now as All-Stars. The two got together to discuss that 'day-after-Christmas' 2012 trade that put them in the positions they are now. Holt came to
The Carmine Hose along with
Joel Hanrahan in exchange for
Ivan De Jesus, Melancon,
Stolmy Pimentel and
Jerry Sands. Out of that group, only Holt and Melancon have truly thrived. Holt has become the only man in MLB history to make an All-Star squad while playing seven different positions before the break. Melancon has become a force in the Bucs bullpen—sporting a 1.61 ERA and 78 saves so far during his time in Pittsburgh. Said Holt,
"I can't tell you that three years ago I thought I'd be sitting here today as an All-Star. But I'm definitely happy with how it worked out." So are we.
