Had he lived, former Red Sox catcher
Sammy White would have been 88 years old today. He passed away in 1991 at the age of 64. His generally horrific Boston teams of the 1950s had a
few decent players beyond
Ted Williams,
Jackie Jensen and
Frank Malzone—and
Sammy was one of them. He hit .264 in his nine years in
Carmine Hose—knocking out 63 HRs. White famously owned a local bowl-a-drome (
Sammy White's Brighton Bowl) that was the scene of a vicious quadruple murder in 1980. But, White should be remembered for achievements
on the field—and those were pretty good.
