"Wait 'till next year" is
not going to work for the Boston Red Sox. The flaws that have been exposed in this 2015 season run much deeper than any one-year fix. To an extent, this ownership regime
had been insulated from severe criticism by the fluky 2013 ring. Not any longer. It's clear that the they have re-saddled themselves with long-term contracts with players that are—by and large—underperforming. From the pitching staff (
Rick Porcello,
Wade Miley) to the position players (
Hanley Ramirez,
Pablo Sandoval), long-term deals have made this a multi-year debacle. Unless
Ben Cherington can find another patsy to take on bad contracts (as the Dodgers did on August 25, 2012), this is a problem that will hang over the team for quite a while.
