Multiple reports suggest that former Red Sox closer
Jonathan Papelbon may be traded to a contender soon. The Phillies have stepped up their efforts to deal the 34-year old in recent days. One landing spot
might be Toronto—although it's unclear if the Blue Jays have enough payroll flexibility to absorb the big numbers left on his contract (not to mention the fact that they're only
marginally contenders). While Papelbon had earlier expressed a willingness to return to the Red Sox, Boston's deep dive to the bottom of the AL East precludes any need for his services—in addition to the fact that
Koji Uehara seems back in stride anyway.
