In a bizarre move,
the Red Sox signed 32-year old right-handed reliever Denny Bautista—a cousin of team legend
Pedro Martinez—to a minor league contract. We know the bullpen is a huge question mark this year, but
Denny Bautista? He last pitched in the bigs
five years ago with the Giants. That year, he worked 33.2 innings and clocked an ERA of 3.74. However, he walked 27 batters and sported a terrible WHIP of 1.545. His career ERA is 5.88 and his career WHIP is an awful 1.688. Why the heck are we interested in this guy—even for AAA Pawtucket/Providence?
Ben Cherington has got some
serious explaining to do.
