In 2008, the Red Sox selected him in the 6th round out of Yale. He was
supposed to be a mainstay behind the plate at Fenway for years—maybe even an heir apparent to
Jason Varitek. But things got complicated for
Ryan Lavarnway. The offensive potential never materialized and he drifted in the Boston system for years. Other catching prospects moved ahead of him. Finally, he was put on waivers and moved through three different MLB rosters since last December. He has settled in
The Charm City and is doing OK as a back-up for the Orioles. Most likely,
he will start against his old club today at 4:05 PM. Says Lavarnway,
"Yeah, this place will always hold a special place for me. My first experience in professional baseball, my first opportunity. It's a great place for me. The city, the fans have always been great." Welcome back, Ryan!
