After formally announcing the signing of lefty reliever
Craig Breslow,
the Red Sox also designated for assignment long-time organizational catcher Dan Butler. Breslow will reportedly receive a one-year, $2 million deal. Butler, who is highly regarded as a premier defensive catcher, will likely be scooped up by another team to serve as a major-league back-up. If Butler clears waivers, Boston can re-sign him and send him back to AAA. The Red Sox feel relatively comfortable at the backstop position in 2015—with youngsters
Christian Vazquez and
Blake Swihart and
veteran (and
Andover High grad)
Ryan Hanigan.
