Assuming that lefty reliever
Craig Breslow passes his physical on Monday,
the Red Sox will have to free up a spot on their 40-man roster to accommodate his signing. According to
WEEI.com's Rob Bradford, the most cuttable suspects are: pitcher
Drake Britton or catcher
Dan Butler. Britton is out of options, so he would likely be the choice—but a trade could also free up spots on the roster. For perspective, a pitcher Boston previously cut from their 40-man has been picked up by the Yankees (after two solid years with the Braves).
David Carpenter was the PTBNL in the deal that brought
John Farrell from Toronto. He was quickly put on waivers and scooped by Atlanta. Now, he will toil in the Bronx.
