It was a wild and wacky Friday night at Fenway. The Red Sox fell behind by scores of 6-3 and 8-6, only to mount comebacks that got them
a thrilling 9-8 win over a stunned Toronto club.
Yoenis Cespedes collected four hits—including a game-winning 400-foot single in the 10th. Boston scored three times in the eighth and three times in the tenth to put a major dent in Toronto's playoff hopes. The Red Sox got two RBIs each from Cespedes and
Xander Bogaerts (3 more hits), and single RBIs from
Dustin Pedroia,
Will Middlebrooks,
Mike Napoli, Mookie Betts (2 more hits) and
Christian Vazquez (also 2 hits).
Allen Webster was yanked after 5.1 innings—having given up three earned runs. The night was almost marred by two separate bonehead plays by the Red Sox—
Allen Craig forgetting the number of outs in the 10th, allowing an extra run to score and
Jemile Weeks not scampering home on an infield error (for what
would have been the winning run).
The Valentine Magic Number now sits at 8.
