He only played 69 games for the Red Sox, and yet it seems like
Sean Casey was a
much bigger part of that 2008 team that
almost made it to the World Series. That edition of
The Carmine Hose fell one Game 7 ALCS
David Price save (1 1/3 innings, no hits, three Ks) short of making it to the
Fall Classic in back-to-back years. While Casey had just two hit-less at-bats in the ALCS, he was a clutch performer throughout the season—hitting
.322 with 14 doubles in just 199 at-bats. In addition to his performance on the field, Casey was a force in the clubhouse—sort of a bridge between the
'Idiot' culture of 2004 and the
'Band of Bearded Brothers' vibe of 2013. Happy 40th, Mr. Mayor!
