According to a source of
ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes,
the Red Sox—presumably at the ownership level—are "continuing" conversations that might lead to another contract offer to ace lefty Jon Lester. The team's four-year, $70 million offer was woefully low considering Lester's pedigree—particularly in the post-season. Edes speculates that Boston could come back with a short-term deal with a higher annual average salary. For example, a three-year offer at $30 million per, would likely satisfy all parties. The Red Sox would avoid a longer-term deal and Lester would get big bucks and another shot at free-agency down the road. Stay tuned.
