Is Sox Closer Uehara Considering Retirement?

(Getty Images)
A couple of days after John Lackey leaked his "retirement" thoughts, Red Sox closer Koji Uehara also had some rather odd things to say about his future. 'The Unhittable One' will be a free agent at the end of this year, and stated the following, "I never think ahead. It doesn't really affect me. If I could change how I perform based on my free agent year, I would. But I can't so I'm just going to pitch how I can pitch. It doesn't really affect me because I'm an older player. Every year I consider my last year. [bold italics added]" Will Boston re-sign a 39-year old closer to a multi-year deal? Will they offer him arbitration for a year? It's hard to say. But as WEEI.com's Rob Bradford asserts, "...while it would seem like a huge overpay on the Red Sox’ behalf to allocate that much money for any closer, the options to replace what Uehara would represent would seem to be uncomfortable." Indeed.
