Jon Lester was masterful today. In eight innings of work, he gave up just one hit and struck out a career-high 15 batters en route to
an eventual 6-3 Red Sox win. It was perhaps Lester's most dominant performance since his no-hitter. He is now tied (with
Stephen Strasburg) for most strikeouts in the major leagues (58).
Jonny Gomes set the tone early, with a grand slam in the first—the second salami in two days for
The Carmine Hose. Solo shots were added later by
David Ortiz and
David Ross to build a 6-0 lead for Lester. An atypical shaky 9th inning for
Chris Capuano led to three quick Oakland runs, but
Koji Uehara came on for the save.
