Today would have been the 114th birthday for one of the best pitchers in Red Sox history—Hall of Famer
Lefty Grove. While his career was split between the Philadelphia A's (his first nine seasons) and
The Carmine Hose (his final eight seasons), Grove amassed 105 wins in Boston laundry. In 1938 (at age 38), Grove lead the American League in ERA (3.08)
and winning percentage (.778). The next year, at age 39, he lead the league in ERA
again (2.54). He started a total of 190 games for the Red Sox
and completed 119 of them—that's 63%! Oh, and he completed 67% of his starts for the A's. He ended up winning exactly 300 games and fanning 2,266 batters in an illustrious 17-year career—which got him into the Hall Of Fame in 1947. Grove only won 20 games once for Boston (1935), but he was a stalwart of the rotation for almost a decade. Happy birthday, Lefty!
