The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham reports that young Red Sox catching prospect
Christian Vazquez was excited to "catch up" with one his mentors at yesterday's Grapefruit League contest—the Rays' Jose Molina. Vazquez hopes to be the next great catcher to hail from Puerto Rico—a lineage that includes
Benito Santiago,
Ivan Rodriguez,
Sandy Alomar Jr.,
Javy Lopez,
Jorge Posada along with Jose and his brothers
Bengie Molina and
Yadier Molina. Said Vazquez,
"There is lot to learn from them if you’re a catcher. I listen to everything they say. I look up to those guys, all of them. A lot of things I try to do, it’s from watching them. The more I can talk to somebody like Jose, the more I can learn. You watch him catch and he does everything the right way." Vazquez is rapidly climbing the organizational ladder—and will likely start the season at AAA Pawtucket. He has the polished defensive skills already, and hit well at AA Portland last year. Look for a possible Vazquez sighting at Fenway some time this year.
