Now that the Red Sox have signed first baseman
Mike Napoli to a two-year deal,
interest in starting to perk up for back-up Mike Carp. Carp—just 27 years old—is in his first year of arbitration eligibility. Although he only played in 86 games last year, his production was among the best on the team—hitting .296 with 9 HRs and 43 RBIs in just 243 plate appearances. His OBP (.362) and slugging percentage (.523) suggest that many teams would take a flyer on Carp as a starting first baseman or outfielder. Oh, he also had one of the most underrated beards on the 2013
Carmine Hose.
