The Red Sox announced this afternoon that they had made one-year qualifying offers ($14.1 million) to free agents Jacoby Ellsbury, Stephen Drew and Mike Napoli. Significantly, they
did not make a qualifying offer to
Jarrod Saltalamacchia. If the three players who were made offers sign with another team, the Red Sox would receive draft picks in compensation. Each player has one week to decide whether to accept Boston's offer. In all likelihood, Ellsbury—represented by
Scott Boras—will not accept the offer and test the market. Red Sox GM
Ben Cherington did say that the team wanted
all the free agents back We shall see.
