Scott Lauber of
The Boston Herald reports that
the Red Sox may be poised to make a bold move in an effort to defend their 2013 World Series crown. With a bevy of top and middle-range prospects in their organization, Boston may pursue a deal with the Miami Marlins for 24-year old slugger
Giancarlo Stanton. With potential losses of four free agents—most importantly
Jacoby Ellsbury—adding an exciting power bat from the right side would significantly upgrade the Red Sox line-up. Boston could put Stanton in right and move
Shane Victorino to center. Lauber speculates that a deal might include the likes of
Will Middlebrooks (providing
Stephen Drew is re-signed and
Xander Bogaerts can take over at third),
Brandon Workman, and some combination of
Drake Britton,
Allen Webster,
Rubby De La Rosa,
Anthony Ranaudo,
Felix Doubront and
Matt Barnes. As Lauber also points out, Stanton could protect
David Ortiz in the lineup and serve as a potential successor at DH down the road. We like the idea. Do it, Ben.
