Dick Williams would be proud. On this September 1st, the Red Sox have made a statement with their 82nd victory—
they are guaranteed to win more than they lose. A pretty significant improvement over 69 wins in 2012.
The Carmine Hose hung on for
a 7-6 win over the Pale Hose—almost blowing a 5-0 lead—and a 3-game series sweep of the White Sox.
Felix Doubront could not make it out of the fourth inning and left it to the bullpen to hold off Chicago. Boston's offensive stars were
David Ortiz (2-3, 3RBIs),
Jacoby Ellsbury (1-4, 2 RBIs),
Stephen Drew (11th HR) and
Dustin Pedroia (2-4 with a run scored). On the scary side,
both Shane Victorino and Ellsbury left the game with injuries—although manager
John Farrell stated that he expects both to play tomorrow against the Tigers.
With the Rays losing again in Oakland, Boston's lead in the AL East is a commanding 5.5 games.
