Mike was born about 25 miles north of Boston in Andover, Massachusetts. He recently completed a stellar four-year career at baseball powerhouse Vanderbilt. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and has just started his professional career playing for the Class A Aberdeen (MD) IronBirds. The IronBirds play their home games at
Ripken Stadium. Get it,
Ripken—
IronMen? It's fitting that Mike start out in a stadium named for a fabled Hall of Famer. 'Mike' is
Mike Yastrzemski and his grandfather is
Carl Yastrzemski. Not too much pressure, right? But, his grandad had some pretty serious pressure taking over for a legend in 1961. Maybe the kid genetically knows how to cope. So far, Mike has played in just three games for Aberdeen. He's gotten one hit and walked three times—giving him on OPS of .917. Perhaps someday the 5'11" 180 pound outfielder will patrol the same piece of turf his 5' 11" 180-pound grandfather did.
