Jonny Gomes has six home runs in 2013—
three of them are of the pinch hit variety and now
two are walk-offs. Gomes took a 2-2 slider into the Monster Seats, giving the Red Sox their eighth walk-off win of the year—
beating the Padres, 2-1. It was mostly a squander-fest for Boston up until then, as the Red Sox missed several golden opportunities to take the lead throughout the game.
Jarrod Saltalamachhia doubled in the first run to tie things in the fourth.
Jon Lester gave up a run in the first, then settled down to go seven not-quite dominant, but successful, innings.
Junichi Tazawa and
Koji Uehara shut down the Padres in the eighth and ninth, respectively. Boston maintained their 3.5 game lead over victorious Baltimore.
