The Red Sox got the jump on the trading deadline by
trading for left-handed reliever Matt Thornton from the Chicago White Sox. Boston had to give up their 36th best prospect to the White Sox in OF
Brandon Jacobs (11th best according to MLB.com). The 22-year old Jacobs had just been promoted to AA Portland. Thornton has held left-handed hitters to a stingy .173 average this year. Reportedly, the Red Sox will also receive "cash considerations" that could be in the $750,000 range. Given the season-ending surgery to
Andrew Miller, this type of a move was almost a necessity.
