To paraphrase the great
Winston Churchill,
"Alfredo Aceves is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma." The quirky Sox pitcher—called up for an emergency start—hurled six solid innings, giving up just one earned run on four hits. Thanks to a two-run home run by
Daniel Nava, the Carmine Hose walked away with a win in the game (a
2-1 squeaker)
and in the series. After his outing, Aceves stayed on in the dugout, "wrapped" in layers of towels—as if in his own little Zen-like sauna cabinet—oblivious to all but his essential Aceves-ness. Not long ago, there was a hue and cry in The Nation to dump the mercurial right-hander. But, despite his wackiness, he will sometimes show how good his stuff is—like last night. Enigma indeed.
