If this was—as we suggested yesterday—
Allen Webster's "Wally Pipp" moment, it was a "pipp" all right! The kid lasted just 1 2/3 innings and gave up eight earned runs. His fastball location was non-existent—'right down Main St.' at 95 MPH. For most major league hitters 'gas without movement' is not a problem (unlike in real life). In order to avoid further scatological references, let's just say this was a stinker—
a 15-8 pasting by a pretty weak Minnesota team. Oh yeah,
Jonny Gomes hit a grand slam—yadda, yadda, yadda. Boston gave up sole possession of first place—but amazingly has been there the first 39 days of the season.
