In his first opportunity to serve in the role of quasi-closer (the game was tied),
Junichi Tazawa gave up a lead-off home run in the top of the ninth, effectively handing the Blue Jays a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox. Boston had battled back from a 2-0 deficit to score two runs in the eight, only to see the lead evaporate in one at-bat.
Jacoby Ellsbury tripled in the first run, and an RBI single by
Dustin Pedroia produced the second in the futile effort.
Clay Buchholz pitched eight solid innings, giving up just the two runs. The loss drops the Red Sox temporarily out of first place for the first time in this 2013 season.
