Many Red Sox fans will not like it, but
Jose Iglesias will be heading down to AAA as soon as Stephen Drew is ready to start—likely on Wednesday night. Team President and CEO
Larry Lucchino made the announcement on Monday during his live interview on
WEEI's Dennis & Callahan Morning Show. Said Lucchino,
"I don’t think our fans have gotten to know Stephen Drew yet. I think when they see him play and he produces, they’ll understand the dilemma Jose Iglesias has caused us. Let’s be excited about Iglesias, celebrate what he’s done so far and recognize that he has a great future with us. And I hope it’s this year at the major-league level for the entire season." Boston signed Drew to a one-year, $9.5 million contract in the off-season, and could not justify keeping the veteran shortstop on the bench due to an injury. Of course, Iglesias—along with
Jackie Bradley, Jr.—has captured the imagination of many fans with his stellar defense and surprising offense (.529 BA). It will be interesting to see how this move plays in The Nation.
