It seems like a perfectly reasonable request.
Wade Boggs spent eleven seasons with the Boston Red Sox—and in five of those years he won the American League batting title.
He was an on-base hitting machine for his time in Boston and eventually made it to the Hall of Fame. So, why isn't his #26 emblazoned on the right field facade? Said Boggs,
"They told me there’s criteria. You have to end your career as a Red Sox." But, of course, that canard was circumvented by hiring
Carlton Fisk as a "consultant" and then retiring his #27. Why can't the Red Sox do the same for Boggs? We've been advocating this move for years—even with The Chicken Man's flirtation with the Evil Ones, he deserves this. He claims he never would have left Boston had Mrs. Yawkey lived and fulfilled her promise to sign him. Retire his number—do it, NOG.
[Editor's Note: Last June, 60% of FN readers rejected the idea of retiring Boggs' number]
