Dave Roberts' Magical Spikes Headed To HOF?
If ever a piece of Red Sox memorabilia belonged in Cooperstown, it's the spikes that Dave Roberts wore in Game Four of the 2004 ALCS. They are like a talisman that embodies the essence of that miraculous championship. Now, thanks to the ingenuity of Sports On Earth writer Gwen Knapp, the spikes could find their way to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Knapp thought it odd that the fabled footwear has been left out of the Hall, so she asked Roberts about it. One thing led to another, and, after a chance encounter with HOF President Jeff Idelson (a Boston-area native), it looks like enshrinement is just a matter of time away. Initially, Roberts wasn't sure—he saw them as a keepsake for his children. But, after talking with his family, he decided that their rightful place was with history. We couldn't agree more.
