According to a report by
CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman,
the "Grand Master Discipline Plan" being cooked up by Ben Cherington is to sign Mike Napoli, Nick Swisher and Cody Ross. Supposedly, Swisher and Napoli would share first base duties—with Napoli catching as well. Ross would go back to right field. Apparently, a Gomes/Swisher/Kalish platoon would come into play in left field. How Boston accommodates the other three catchers on the roster (Salty, Lavarnway and Ross) without a trade of one or more of them is a mystery. By the way, the average Opening Day 2013
age of the Napoli/Swisher/Ross triumvirate is
31.66 years. Is this any way to build a ball club that can contend now and in the future?
