As you might expect,
Bobby Valentine's outrageous comments that
David Ortiz, essentially, quit on his team have resulted in responses on many different fronts. Ortiz's agent stated:
"David loves to play this game and has never quit on anyone, and most important of all on this team that means so much to him. He has been a leader on this team and is disappointed in Bobby's remarks." Red Sox GM
Ben Cherington—who is in the midst of negotiating a new contract with his designated hitter—stated clearly:
"I wouldn't be trying to re-sign him if I had any concern about David's commitment to baseball or to the Red Sox." Why Valentine would choose to throw one of his few defenders under the bus is puzzling, but we've stopped trying to figure out the strange mind of Mr. V.
