The Red Sox have opened August 2012 the same way they opened September 2011. This is not a good omen. Tonight, a complete nobody—making just his sixth MLB start—limited Boston to just
two hits (both by Adrian Gonzalez) in an
embarrassing 5-0 shutout at the hands of one of the worst teams in baseball. This is a four-game series the Red Sox had to sweep to have any claim to being a Wild Card threat.

Jon Lester had another frustrating outing, delivering a quality start (8 innings, three earned runs), but yielding all three runs with two outs. But, this loss falls squarely on the anemic offense—you have to put up lots of crooked numbers against somebody named Samuel Deduno. They didn't.
