Sox Eyeing LHP Jason Vargas From Mariners

Jeff Chiu / AP
According to the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo, the Red Sox are targeting Seattle left-hander Jason Vargas. This is in accordance with other reports, suggesting Boston is trying to upgrade its starting rotation—using spare parts from its outfield and bullpen depth. Vargas is an under .500 career pitcher with a 4.38 ERA. This year, he's 11-7 with a 3.76 ERA. And, he has given up fewer hits than innings pitched over his career—a key indicator of pitching success. He would have a significantly better offense behind him in Boston than he did in Seattle.
