The Red Sox announced tonight that
closer Andrew Bailey will undergo thumb surgery on Wednesday, and be out at least 3-4 months and probably longer. This effectively ends his season before it starts. The Red Sox have not announced what they will do for a closer—throwing an already shaky pitching situation into chaos.
