Although manager Bobby Valentine is not expressly naming an Opening Day starter, some of the banter he's been engaging in may hint at his choice: Jon Lester. WEEI.com's Rob Bradford suggests that Lester—the 2011 Opening Day starter—is not perceived to have dropped off significantly during the year (15-9, 3.47 ERA), and thus Bobby V. may think he "deserves" to be the 2012 choice once again.
A lot of this is political, of course, and—in the grand scheme of things—rather petty. But this crop of Red Sox starting pitchers have egos the size of a bucket of Popeye's chicken. Our choice would be Lester, simply because he's been the most consistent pitcher over the last few years.
