Red Sox Should Extend Ellsbury Now

Outside of the penny-pinching, soccer-loving world of the NOG, most baseball experts think the Red Sox should be extending Jacoby Ellsbury's contract for a significant length of time—the general consensus being six years. While there is some quibbling over whether they should extend now or next off-season, the basic idea is to lock up a potential superstar before he (and the Notorious B-O-R-A-S) sniff free agency. Of course, with the huge contract handed out to Carl Crawford last year, Boston—in its new "small market" mode—portrays itself as incapable of such an extension. This is, of course, baloney. They have the money. Ellsbury has proven he is a durable MVP-level player. The Red Sox should extend Ellsbury before the start of this season and do it for six years.
