The Captain Bids A Tearful Farewell

Fittingly, it took place at home plate in the new jetBlue Park at Fenway South. After fifteen years with he Red Sox—seven as Captain—Jason Varitek gave an emotional "goodbye" to fans, teammates and coaches yesterday. As we have said many times before, his primary legacy will always be the historic confrontation with the 'Supercilious Centaur', but his contributions were so much more. He was a stabilizing force for wave after wave of Red Sox pitchers—the gold standard of preparation and hard work. He was the rock you could always depend on. Sure, he probably stayed around a bit too long, and he wasn't able to fix the Romper Room that was the 2011 Red Sox. But those facts do not outweigh his overwhelmingly positive impact on the franchise. We will all miss him.
