Despite his .318 career on-base percentage,
Mike Aviles might be Bobby V.'s choice to lead off for your 2012 Boston Red Sox. Valentine feels Jacoby Ellsbury's RBI potential is devalued when he leads off—not a crazy notion—and thinks Aviles offers an aggressive posture that can strike "fear into a pitcher's heart". Bobby goes on about Aviles in the top spot:
"It gets a guy doubting his stuff in a hurry. We'll see." At least Valentine is thinking outside the box on the lineup—which calcified into the same guys in the same spots under Tito.
Shaking things up is a good thing. However, if we're going to start experimenting, isn't Pedroia a better option leading off? Even though it sounds counter-intuitive, The Muddy Chicken is aggressive and patient at the same time—Aviles is not. In any event, Sox fans should get ready for weekly—and maybe even daily—"Quotations From Chairman Bobby".
