In an emotional speech with the faux Green Monster as a backdrop, he thanked the fans for always supporting him during his 17-year stay here. He also thanked former Sox GM Dan Duquette (who now serves in the same role in Baltimore) for bringing him to Boston—"the place I belonged". Conceding that it was the toughest decision of his life, he said that, in his heart, he knew retiring would "help the team's chances to win". He also stated that the greatest thrill of his life was bringing a World Series championship to Boston and "the generations and generations of Red Sox fans". Ultimate class.
