Word has come that Bob Ryan will be retiring after covering the Summer Olympics in London. Over the decades, Ryan has been the only reason to plunk down hard earned cash for the Boston Globe. Pretty much everything else coming out of The Morgue On Morrissey Blvd. is forgettable. Even more so lately.
From his passionate coverage of the Celtics to his keen baseball eye, there is no one even remotely close to Ryan on the Boston sportswriting scene—or anywhere else for that matter. He is the unquestioned 'Dean of Hub Sportswriting'. No matter how arcane an issue might be, Ryan always cuts to the core. He almost always gets it right—in a reasoned, articulate fashion. Luckily, he will retain a part-time role with the Globe, but we will miss reading his regular thoughts. Amazingly, he endeared himself to provincial Boston readers and listeners despite his Jersey twang. I never thought I'd miss that signature accent so much. Keep writing as much as possible, Bob!
