Freddy Lynn Turns 60 Years Old Today

For those of us in the Nation old enough to remember the easy grace of Fred Lynn, it's hard to believe he's turning 60 today. Images of him gliding across Fenway's center field still burn brightly in our memories. Diving catches, over-the-head catches, catches smashing into walls—all were in his repertoire. And that was just one side of the ball. The man could hit as well. His lefty swing was made for Fenway—he admits that if he stayed in Boston, and stayed healthy, he was destined for Cooperstown. In his seven years in Carmine Hose he hit .308 with a .383 OBP, .502 slugging and a .902 OPS. He clouted 124 home runs for Boston—39 in his best year of 1979. Fred Lynn made it all look so easy—and he still looks great at his Fenway Legends cameos each year. Happy birthday, Freddy.
