Captain Seriously Considering Retirement

Jason Varitek will be 40 years old in about two months. He still thinks he can play at the major league level. But, as Nick Cafardo of the Globe reports, the Captain is seriously considering hanging up his spikes for good. Mostly, it's "the legacy thing". He has worn no other but Carmine Hose in his 15-year career. He won two rings in Boston and was an All-Star three times. He hit .256 in Boston—a number that was more than compensated for by his leadership qualities and his molding of multiple pitching staffs. He will always be remembered for his epic confrontation with The Fraudulent One, an event that set in motion the greatest achievement in team history—the 2004 crown. We can't possibly imagine him in other laundry. We hope he lays down the mask and joins the team in some other capacity.
