Theo: 'We Knew Something Was Wrong'

In an exclusive interview on WEEI 93.7's Dennis & Callahan Morning Show, Cubs President and CEO Theo Epstein admitted that the Red Sox '"knew something was wrong" during the Black September Collapse of 2011. Theo said he encouraged multiple team meetings— both led by Terry Francona (most notably in Toronto) and players-only confabs. But, he implied, "losing an 8th inning 3-run lead" effectively makes any progress made at these meetings moot. Theo also touched on the on-going compensation talks, saying the sides need to make a deal that "makes the Red Sox happy" and also follows precedents on similar compensation issues. He also did not deny interest in Prince Fielder—despite the signing of Anthony Rizzo. Finally, he confessed that he never knew that he and Ben Cherington sounded the same—claiming that BenCher was constantly kidded about his "Harvard Business School-speak."
