Reports out of Denver suggest that the Red Sox are actively pursuing Colorado outfielder Seth Smith to play right field. The Rockies need shortstop help and have serious interest in Marco Scutaro. Last year, the Red Sox asked for Smith to be included in the abortive trade for Ubaldo Jimenez—so we know they like him. The 29-year old Smith is a lefty and would not solve the need for a right-handed outfield bat, but he can come cheap—which is the new watchword on Yawkey Way. In 2011, Smith hit .284 with 15 HRs and 59 RBIs in 147 games. He's a lifetime .275 hitter. Ironically, Smith made the final out in the 2007 World Series, fanned by Jonathan Papelbon.
