"Assaultin' Dalton" Jones Turns 68 Today

The greatest pinch-hitter in Red Sox history, Dalton Jones, turns 68 today. We pay particular homage to Dalton because he is the namesake of our monitor of attitudes toward The Olde Towne Team—the Dalton Jones Industrial Average. When Black September arrived, the 'Dalton Jones' plunged so low it made the NYSE look robust by comparison. It works, and so did he. In 1964, his first pinch-hit ever cleared the bases and gave the Red Sox a walk-off win over the Los Angeles Angels (walk-offs were much more subdued back then). In the Impossible Dream year of 1967, he rained clutch pinch-hits all over American League parks—gaining a reputation as an assassin off the bench. Happy birthday, Dalton!
