CHB Profiles LL

In a compelling column in the Globe today, Dan Shaughnessy (who is actually writing good stuff lately) profiles the real power behind the Red Sox throne—Larry Lucchino. Those of us who do not own 'pink hats' have known this for years now, but BlackSeptemberGate and its aftermath have made it so clear that even casual fans can't miss the obvious.

Shaughnessy delivers an even-handed account of a kid from Pittsburgh who rose to become one of the most influential—and controversial—figures in baseball. By battling for the construction of Camden Yards, he revolutionized ballpark design. Ironically, he became the "Tweak-Meister General" in the oldest ballpark in America. And he was a major cog in the 2004 and 2007 championship wheels. And, hell, he did coin the term "Evil Empire". That alone puts him in the Red Sox Hall of Fame. God knows he's been exasperating and Machiavellian in his tenure here, but he's still here. Get it?
